AMC completes the sale of 40 million shares, averaging $8.14 apiece, creating what one analyst called a "safety net" for the company to ride out the Hollywood strike and liquidity challenges.

The United Auto Workers plans to limit its strike action to one plant each for Ford, GM and Stellantis. But UAW President Shawn Fain says that if negotiations don't advance, the walkout could hit more plants nationwide.

With a Sept. 14 expiration of Ford's current contract with the United Auto Workers looming, the automaker made a contract proposal that would boost pay by 15%. The union has sought a 46% increase, and the UAW's leader rejected the offer dramatically.

Once the bankrupt trucking company satisfies three big debts totaling about $1.2 billion, the remaining unsecured creditors will face real challenges being made whole. This includes the pension fund for union workers: Its claim probably will be "in the billions."
