After a yearlong trial period, the three partners at Copaken Brooks were ready to add a fourth — Bill Crandall. Their merger sharpens the company's development and procurement skills. "I'm not sure I would have done this with anybody else in Kansas City," Crandall said.

Engineering firm Payne & Brockway and developer Todd Bleakley will add 80 apartments in five buildings to the area of Gardner known as University Park. Their Tallgrass development's first two phases included 17 buildings, and the fourth will add nine.
