When the roof for a building at American Century Investments’ headquarters campus in Kansas City needed replacing, the company saw it as a modern-day marketing opportunity. The building at 4400 Main St. houses American Century’s call center. Outflows are slowing, but Waddell continues shedding AUM

After losing $24 billion in assets under management in 2016, Waddell & Reed Financial Inc. continues to struggle, seeing assets drop to $80.4 billion in the second quarter, down 7 percent from a year ago. Although assets continue to decline, the company’s (NYSE: WDR) outflows and market action gains are improving. The company experienced outflows of $2.5 billion in the second quarter, compared with $9.8 billion a year ago, for a 74 percent improvement. Those were the company’s best quarterly…

KC printer adds talent for growth by acquiring Olathe operation

Kansas City-based NextPage, a state-of-the-art printing and marketing company, acquired Burns Printing in Olathe for an undisclosed amount. Burns Printing was owned by John and Diane Burnell, who are retiring. NextPage will offer jobs to all 20 of their employees. Housed in a building constructed in 1890 that originally was a stable for a bakery business distributing bread throughout Kansas City, Lifted Spirits Distillery feels the pull of history every day. President Kyle Claypool and head distiller Michael Stuckey now use that old building at 1734 Cherry St. to once again distribute products made from local grains all over the area. Springfield CPA firm acquires KC-area bank consultants

The Whitlock Co. agreed to acquire RPA CPAs LLC and RPA Consulting Inc. for an undisclosed amount. Founded in 1913 and based in Springfield, Mo., The Whitlock Co. (TWC) provides accounting and consulting services to the Kansas City metropolitan area, Southwest Missouri, Southeast Kansas and Northeast Oklahoma. Alphapointe earns partial win in patent battle

Kansas City-based nonprofit Alphapointe succesfully had two claims of patent infringement related to a tourniquet it produces for the U.S. Army dismissed. Alphapointe, an organization dedicated to providing jobs and assistance to the blind and visually impaired, received a letter in October 2015 from South Carolina-based Composite Resources Inc. claiming that Alphapointe's tourniquet design infringed on four of its patents.
